GOOD NEWS: Gates Foundation To Pay Off Nigeria’s $76-M Polio Debt

Nigeria is closer to becoming a polio-free country and now they’re getting help covering the cost. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will pay off a $76-million loan Nigeria took from Japan to help fight the disease.

Nigeria took the loan out in 2014 and repayments were supposed to begin this year. The Gates Foundation agreed to repay the loan after Nigeria met the condition of getting more than 80% vaccination coverage in at least one round each year in very high risk areas across 80% of the country’s local government areas.
