GOOD NEWS: School’s Comfort Closet Helps Students In Need

Suited for Success closet

Thanks to teachers at Niota Elementary School in Tennessee, students who need hygiene supplies or clothes have a place to get them. Kindergarten teachers Vanessa Bateman and Heather Malick started a “comfort closet” stocked with clothes, shoes, and toiletries at the school, which is a combined elementary and middle school.

The comfort closet is in an old locker room, so students can discreetly go to the room to “shop” without other students seeing. This lets them focus on learning and they don’t have to be embarrassed about needing something. Parents and local businesses keep the closet full of needed supplies and Bateman says about 10 students a week use it.
