90 year old walks to raise money for the kids

An Illinois man has set out on an ambitious journey to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.Dean Troutmanhas done something like this before, walking 700 miles around Illinois to raise $70-thousand to build a new playground in memory of his late wife,Peggy.

But this time? He’s on a yearlong journey that will take him 36-hundred miles through 16 states. And did we mention Troutman is 90 years old? But he’s not letting that stop him from walking and he averages about 12 miles a day. He’s motivated to raise money for the renowned children’s hospital, which focuses on treating patients with cancer and other diseases and costs about $2.8-million a day to run, but patients aren’t charged for their care.

Troutman sleeps at fire departments most of the time, with his volunteer firefighter son making most of the arrangements for him. He says the only thing that will prevent him from finishing the trek is if people stop donating to St. Jude in his name and his physical abilities. “I'm looking forward to completing it,” he says. “My 90-year-old legs can quit at any time. I'm hoping every day to be able to go another day.”
