A gas station owner is selling gas for less than he’s paying for it to help his customers. With local gas prices approaching $6 a gallon, Phoenix gas station owner Jaswiendre Singh knows his customers are in a tough spot. But even though as of Wednesday night, his suppliers were charging him $5.66 a gallon, he was only selling his gas for $5.19 a gallon, a 47 cents per gallon loss.
Every day, Singh is losing around $500, but he says it’s worth it to help his customers and his community. “People don’t have the money right now,” he explains. “My mother and my father did teach us to help if you have something. If you have something you have to share with other people.”
Singh has been selling gas at a loss at his station since at least March. And as gas prices have gone up, he’s increased the discount. He says that he and his wife are working more to try and make up for the loss and they’re still making a profit inside the store, but money isn’t his primary concern today. “God gave me help. It doesn’t matter,” he says. “We are not here to make money right now. I’m very happy to help the other people.”
