GOOD NEWS: Mom Of First Gerber Baby With Down Syndrome Says People Embrace

Last January, baby Lucas was chosen from over 140,000 entries to be the 2018 Gerber Spokesbaby, making history as the first one with Down Syndrome. Now his mom, Courtney Warren, says winning the contest has taught her so much and changed her view of the world for the better.

Warren was worried when her son was born with the chromosome disorder, but now she’s less afraid after seeing the support and kindness toward her son after winning the Gerber contest. She says they’ve gotten supportive letters and emails from other parents sharing their stories and cheering Lucas on.

“It’s easy to see the world as a place full of judging eyes, a place that I need to shelter Lucas from. The reaction to Lucas, however, taught me the world is more full of love than I ever thought possible,” his mom explains. “Humanity is better than I thought. People weren’t just ready to accept Lucas. They were ready to embrace him.”
