The "overwhelming" response to a sale event at Build-A-Bear Workshop caused the retailer to shut down long lines outside stores across the U.S. and Canada. Crowds mobbed the stores well before the doors opened, causing the event to end "due to crowds and safety concerns" from local authorities.
"Based on the information available to us before the day began, we could not have predicted this unprecedented reaction to our Pay Your Age Day event," Build-A-Bear said.
Build-A-Bear announced the 'Pay Your Age' event earlier this week, giving young customers the chance to pay their current age for the stuffed animals. The company apparently didn't anticipate such a large crowd.
Shoppers shared photos and videos of lines, with one captioned: "OML we survived the #buildabear #payyourage event! It was absolutely insane."
OML we survived the #buildabear #payyourage event! It was absolutely insane. I mean #INSANE . We were there super early and originally only like #10 in line until they opened the flood gates and chaos broke out leaving us still at the “front” of a super long line. 🤦🏻♀️ No idea why I endured this, but 4 hours and a whole lot of drama later we emerged with Madison’s new friend 😊 #beast ! As stressful as it was (and I can’t imagine doing it again.. unless they learn to prepare better) at least Madison had a blast! She made friends in line, got to add magical sounds to her new friend, made him smell like #cottoncandy and now has attached herself to him permanently 🤣 While she’s playing out her dream of being #belle and dancing with the #Beast , I’m resting my poor feet and taking in as much coffee as possible to make it through the rest of the day! #thethingswedoforourkids #chaos #theyranout #beautyandthebeast #disney #disneyfan #disneyfamily #newbestfurfriend
