Last Place Runners hold hands

A photo of two women helping each other finish the Pittsburgh Marathon is going viral for all the right reasons. The pair of runners, Laura Mazur and Jessica Robertson, were complete strangers who were in last place and they joined hands in the last mile of the race to encourage each other to keep going to get to the finish line.

Fellow marathoners Betsy Magovern and Daniel Heckert had already finished and were at the 25-mile cheer station when they saw Mazur and Robertson holding hands as they headed into the final mile. They snapped a photo of the touching moment and Magovern says it represents what the “running community is all about.”

“It isn’t about finishing first," Magovern says. "It’s about helping each and every person change their lives for the better.”
