A woman, gifted moon dust by Neil Armstrong, is suing NASA as a proactive measure to ensure that it remains rightfully hers. As a 10-year-old, Laura Cicco, known then as Laura Murray, had been given a vial of moon dust fresh off Armstrong’s trip to the moon. Her father, a former member of the U.S. Army and FAA pilot was friends with Armstrong at the time. She recently discovered the vial in a box of her parents’ things and is now suing NASA to make sure it doesn’t try to get it back from her.
Just so we’re all on the same page, NASA has yet to try and reclaim Cicco’s vial. In fact, it’s not known if it even has plans to. The lawsuit is simply a proactive measure on Cicco’s part to ensure that it won’t try, but even if NASA did, it wouldn’t without precedent.
Cicco’s vial of dust has been analyzed twice to make sure it was the real stuff and scientist think it “likely” is. No word on NASA’s response to the lawsuit as of yet.
