Cop give a meal instead of a ticket

A Massachusetts police officer spread holiday cheer to a family in need and used his own money to buy them Christmas dinner. Somerset Police Officer Matt Lima was called to a Stop & Shop grocery store days before Christmas after store security said two women didn’t scan everything they put in their bags at a self-checkout register.

But instead of charging the women with shoplifting, Lima talked to them and learned they were struggling to make ends meet and had only taken food for their kids’ Christmas dinner. He’s got two kids of his own and was moved to help after hearing their story. Police say he served them with a notice not to trespass, but didn’t press charges. And then he bought them a $250 gift card to buy groceries at a different store.

“I just did what I felt was right,” Lima explains. “It's not about me, I just tried to put myself in that family's shoes and show a little bit of empathy."
