Hiker OK after 50 foot fall

After falling 50 feet off a cliff, a hiker in Georgia is rescued and walks away with minor injuries. Last Friday, dozens of rescuers from 17 agencies performed an “extremely challenging” technical rescue to save a 17-year-old hiker. The teen had fallen while trying to take a photo and was wedged in the rocks where two waterfalls converge at Raven Cliff Falls in Helen.

Rabun County Technical Rescue Team member Chris Wright says the operation lasted several hours and required a large amount of gear. There were times during the effort when rescuers were afraid they wouldn’t be able to save the young woman, but they eventually freed the hiker from the rocks.

The Gainesville Fire Department reported that, with some help, the teen was able to walk out of the area and was transported for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries, calling it “a miraculous turn of events.” The Rabun County Search and Rescue team echoed the department’s remarks, saying, “Absolutely a miracle, amazing work by everybody under extremely difficult conditions!”
