Veteran finally makes it home

The Gary Sinise Foundation is helping a Navy veteran get back home after suffering a stroke. While on a cross-country flight to visit family, Ben Cain Sr. had a stroke and the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Tennessee. For the last six weeks, he’s been getting care at a Tennessee rehab facility and his family has been making the trek from their home in California to visit. The Vietnam veteran has gotten well enough to go home, but the trip will require a 35-hour ambulance ride and will cost more than $10-thousand.

Cain’s family reached out to the Gary Sinise Foundation to see if they could help the family get their dad home and the foundation agreed. Cain’s son Ben Cain Jr. was choked up thinking about everyone who’s helped his father in recent weeks. “Southwest Airlines, they saved my father’s life,” he says. “But Lieutenant Dan is going to get my dad home.”

The family hopes that having their father back home will help him on his road to recovery. “I don’t get a lot of response from him,” says Cain Jr. “But I believe once he gets home and sees his friends and his family that are there and his grandkids, that these people will inspire him to want to fight.”
