GOOD NEWS: Students Surprise Teacher With Duke Basketball Tix For Christmas

For the past three years, Bill Slayton has been a mentor and academic advisor to the 12 students in his homeroom class at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina. The English teacher made such a difference in their lives that the teens wanted to do something extra special for him for Christmas.

The students knew Dr. Slayton is a huge Duke Blue Devils fan, but he doesn’t afford himself the luxury of buying the expensive tickets to their basketball games that are played four hours away in Durham. So the teens pooled their money and raised enough to buy two $300 tickets, so their teacher and his son could see Duke play Florida State on December 30. Included with the tickets were a thank you letter and a Blue Devils necktie.

“I was surprised and moved by it,” Slayton says. “This was the day before exams. A bunch of them were hearing from colleges. They had plenty of other things to be worried about at that moment, so it shocked me that they were thinking about me.”
