GOOD NEWS: Donations Pour In For Beekeepers After Vandals Destroy Hives

Statewide Drought Takes Toll On California's Honey-Producing Bee Population

When Tori and Justin Engelhardt woke up Thursday to find that vandals had broken in and destroyed all 50 of their beehives, the Sioux City, Iowa couple thought their honey business was wiped out. All of their bees were killed - half a million of them - and they thought things “looked really hopeless,” but thanks to a GoFundMe page, donations are pouring in.

The Engelhardt’s doubted their Wild Hill Honey business could survive that huge financial hit, but in just a few days, the crowdfunding campaign set up to help them has received more than $30,000.

"Thank you to everyone for your generous contributions and your amazing show of support," the couple writes on Wild Hill Honey’s Facebook page. "Because of you, we will be able to continue our business in the spring. We are deeply moved by your compassion. Between the contributions and the equipment we were able to salvage, our needs have been met."
