In Bill Gates’ article for “Time” magazine, he explains that his parents were big believers in the importance of giving back. His wife, Melinda, grew up with similar values, so the couple shares the desire to give and they encourage others to do the same.
“I encourage you to choose your own cause and get involved,” Gates explains, “whether you can donate your funds, your time or your voice.”
He says these are a few of his favorite nonprofits and resources to help your find an organization to support:
- Charity Navigator and GuideStar - These databases can help you find reputable organizations working on the causes you care about.
- DonorsChoose.org - A teacher started this group to help his colleagues get the classroom supplies they need. You can pick a specific project or school to help, or help one recovering from a natural disaster.
- Giving Tuesday - This movement was started to celebrate philanthropy on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Here you can find ways to get involved and a lot of organizations will match your donations given on that day.
- UNICEF - They work to keep kids around the world healthy and safe, a top priority for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
