GOOD NEWS: Third-Grader Saves Friend With Heimlich Maneuver

A couple of best friends in third grade in Wisconsin are so close they can finish each other’s sentences, but now they’re even closer after one saved the other from choking. Anna Faucett and Olivia Kormanik were eating lunch at school when Anna choked on a hot dog.

The little girl couldn’t speak, but she did the universal sign for choking and her bestie knew what was happening and started doing the Heimlich maneuver. Olivia saved Anna and she did it using skills they learned on a field trip to the fire department with their Brownie troop.

“It is quite gratifying to know that we were able to make such a drastic impact in some young girl’s life,” says Deputy Chief Joel Deutsch with the Thiensville Fire Department. And Anna says, “She’s a really good person and she saved my life, so I was really grateful.”
