GOOD NEWS: Firefighter Reunites With FDNY Who Saved Her As A Kid

It’s been 16 years since now-retired New York City firefighter Stephen McNally met Anissa Cruz and it was a night they’ll never forget. Cruz was only six at the time and McNally rescued her from the Bronx apartment she lived in with her parents that was engulfed in flames.

Her father died in the fire that night, but the now 21-year-old and her mother only suffered smoke inhalation and burns. But that fire changed Cruz’s life and because of McNally, she is now a firefighter in Florida. So on a recent visit to New York, she stopped by to visit the man who saved her life and tell him he inspired her follow in his footsteps.

“Lt. Stephen McNally was my big hero that day and he did everything to make sure I was okay,” Cruz explains. “I wanted to give back the same way. I was given a second chance and now I want to give somebody else theirs.”
