Egypt has been dependent on fossil fuels for energy needs, but now they’re putting all that sunshine they get to good use. The country has started construction on what will be the world’s largest solar park.
The Benban Solar Park is expected to be completed by the middle of 2019 and Egypt hopes it’ll generate at least 22% of their energy needs from sustainable sources by 2022.
“This project will help Egypt tap into its massive potential for solar energy and scale back its use of expensive—and polluting—fossil fuels,” explains Mouayed Makhlouf, IFC Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “That’s especially important with the specter of climate change looming.”
