After a passenger started having trouble breathing on a flight from Shanghai to New York, a China Eastern Airlines pilot dumped 33 tons of fuel in mid-air so he could make an emergency landing to save the passenger. The 60-year-old woman started having issues breathing and was moved to business class and received medical attention but her breathing became worse and she fell unconscious.
In an effort to save the woman’s life, the pilot decided to dump fuel so the plane would be under the maximum landing weight. After descending and dumping, the plane landed safely at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska.
The plane then refueled and continued to New York, landing after a six-hour delay. The passenger was taken to the local hospital for treatment and was released the next day to continue her travels.
