The El Bari Community Health Clinic in San Antonio is the only totally free clinic in the city and they provide medical care to the uninsured. The clinic is staffed by all-Muslim volunteers, who are also practicing doctors, and they’ve been caring for those in need for four years now - regardless of their religion.
“We will treat everyone who comes in, even those with insurance,” says Dr. Suhaib Haq, who founded the clinic with his wife, Dr. Sarah Samreen. “But only once.”
The couple from Pakistan have been working with those who can’t afford medical care since they were students and when they came to the U.S. to do their residencies, they continued to look for ways to help those in need. “Apart from my relationship with god, this is the most important thing in my life,” Samreen said. “The way I eat to feed my body, working here feeds my soul.”
