GOOD NEWS: L.A. Doubles Budget To Ease Homeless Problem

In his fiscal budget for 2018-19, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has more than doubled the amount — $430-million — dedicated to dealing with the city’s homeless population. The centerpiece of his program is a $20-million fund to open shelters across the city.

The new budget still needs to be approved by the City Council, but more than half of the homeless spending in the new budget is long-term debt authorized by Proposition HHH to pay for housing construction. To compare, the budget for spending on homelessness in 2017-18 was $180-million.
