Sammie Striker has been running a successful lemonade stand for the last few summers, but the Michigan girl isn’t pocketing her profits. Instead she’s helping veterans one cup at a time.
It started four years ago when Sammie was only eight years old and for the first couple of summers, she had her stand in her family’s Saginaw Township home’s driveway. And for the last few years, the tradition continued in front of American Legion Post 439, where business has been booming for the 12-year-old entrepreneur. Sammie recently presented a check to the VA hospital for $2,111.53 from her lemonade stand earnings.
“It’s a great message to other students and other young people to be as generous and as hard working as she is,” says Jeffrey Wendt, with the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center.
And Sammie’s already planning for next summer’s sales. Her goal is to raise $5,000 for the VA in 2019.
