GOOD NEWS: Teen Saves Elderly Neighbor From House Fire

He’s technically still a kid, but that didn’t stop a 17-year-old from saving his next door neighbor’s life when a window-mounted air conditioner caught fire. Taequan Mitchell was at his family’s Savannah, Georgia home when he saw the flames next door and went to help.

The teen asked his mom to call the fire department while he went inside the home next door to rescue 85-year-old Stephen Solomon, who was asleep inside at the time. Savannah Fire Rescue spokesperson Jenel Few says Taequan woke Solomon and waited with him until firefighters put out the blaze.

“Not only did Taequan exhibit exemplary bravery, he had the foresight to close the door of the burning room, which helped to prevent the fire and smoke from spreading,” Few explains. The teen will be recognized by Fire Chief Charles Middleton for being a hero in his neighborhood.
