A lot has changed at the corner of Smyrna Parkway and Outer Loop in Louisville, Kentucky over the last 50 years, but one thing that’s stayed the same is the school crossing guard. Naomi Thomas has been keeping students safe as they go to and from school for five decades now.
The 88-year-old was recently honored by coworkers, bosses, and friends at a gathering to show their gratitude for her service. Even when she was hit by a truck back in the 80s, she was back at her crosswalk three days later, despite injuries to her hand, thigh, and hip.
"You are one tough character," Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Steve Conrad said to Thomas during the celebration. "Even I would've taken a week off."
