GOOD NEWS: Korean War Vet Gets Diploma 63 Years Later

High School Diploma

Back in 1955, Gene Johnson was still a high school senior when he was called to join the Korean War. He never got around to getting his diploma when he returned home after the war, but now the 82-year-old veteran can add high school graduate to his list of achievements thanks to his community.

Pastor Tom Haddon and Tennessee State Senator Ferrell Haile learned about Johnson’s story and contacted Sumner County officials to see what they could do. They were able to get Johnson’s diploma backdated to officially make him a graduate of the class of 1955, like he should have been. And on Sunday, Johnson finally got that Henderson High School diploma, after 63 long years.

"It always made me feel kind of funny because I did all the right things and I didn't get it” Johnson admits. “It just fills my heart. I wasn't expecting all this, I just wasn't.”
