GOOD NEWS: Dog Waits For Weeks At Owner’s Home Burned In Camp Fire

A month after evacuating during the deadly Camp Fire in northern California, a family returned to check on their burned property and found their loyal dog waiting there in the ashes. Madison, an Anatolian shepherd mix, was left behind as Andrea Gaylord fled November 8th and stayed there protecting their former home until his owner was allowed back to check on her former home.

Gaylord had animal rescuer Shayla Sullivan check on Madison and she spotted the outdoor guard dog in the area and kept leaving food for him until Gaylord could return. Sullivan also helped locate Madison’s brother, who was taken to a shelter 85 miles away during the chaos of the fire.

“Imagine the loyalty of hanging in there in the worst of circumstances and being here waiting,” Gaylord says of her guard dog. “Their instinctual job is to watch the flocks and we’re part of them. It’s a comforting feeling.”
