GOOD NEWS: Anonymous $2M Donation Will House Chimps Rescued From Research

Anonymous $2M Donation Will House Chimps Rescued From Research Facilities

Thanks to an anonymous $2-million donation, more than 200 chimpanzees who have been living in research facilities will now have a new home. The chimps are a step closer to retirement thanks to the generous stranger’s gift to Chimp Haven, the national chimpanzee sanctuary in Louisiana.

The anonymous donor is committed to supporting Chimp Haven’s “Welcome Them Home” campaign, which is a focused effort to build more habitats and expand veterinary care to accommodate the animals’ transitions from research facilities. There are already more than 260 chimps who have retired from biomedical research living at Chimp Haven and these funds will help provide more space to chimpanzees who are still waiting for a retirement home.

“Donors like this make it clear that people are deeply committed to the retirement of former research chimpanzees,” explains Rana Smith, president and CEO of Chimp Haven. “This national effort is as important as ever, which is why we’re working diligently to expand our habitats and give these chimps the sanctuary retirement they deserve.”
