GOOD NEWS: Vet Who Lost A Leg Helps Colin Powell Change A Flat Tire

While on his way to a doctor’s appointment, Colin Powell got a flat tire. The retired four-star general of the Army was headed to Walter Reed Military Hospital when his tire blew and being a “car guy” he got to work changing it. But the cold weather made the lug bolts really tight and as he was working on them, a man pulled over to help.

Powell shared the experience in a Facebook post, explaining that the man - who had a prosthetic leg - told him he recognized him and wanted to help. Powell says he learned that the man, Anthony Maggert, was a fellow veteran who lost his leg in Afghanistan. The kind stranger helped Powell finish the job and they went their separate ways, but later reconnected on social media.

“You were always an inspiration, a leader and a statesman,” Maggert tells Powell on Facebook. “After 33 years in the military you were the giant whose shoulders we stood upon to carry the torch to light the way.”

The former Secretary of State says he was moved by the man’s message. “You touched my soul and reminded me about what this country is all about and why it is so great,” Powell writes. “Let’s stop screaming at each other. Let’s just take care of each other. You made my day.”
