An animal shelter in Washington, D.C. has found a new way to make life a little better for the dogs staying there and bring joy to people, too, with their new “happy hour.” At the Humane Rescue Alliance, they’ll allow folks to check the dogs out for a few hours at a time, instead of foster owners committing to taking shelter dogs for longer periods of time.
“The goal of the program is to reduce stress in shelter dogs and sustain their stay here until their family comes along to adopt them,” explains Jenna Billeter, director of foster and volunteer resources at the Humane Rescue Alliance.
Happy hour helps calm the canines, but volunteers say they like the flexibility as well. It gives them a chance to spend time with a dog and get them out of the shelter for a break. Since the program started in February, Humane Rescue Officials say there have been more than 100 happy hour trips for 84 dogs.
