Early in the pandemic when health care workers were running out of personal protective equipment, Jason Erdreich found a way to help. The middle school shop teacher from New Jersey turned his home into a PPE factory, using 3D printers to make thousands of face masks for his community.
“I mean I had to,” the 26-year-old says. “I had the resources to help, I was able to help, I couldn’t not help others that were doing so much to help us.”
He not only ran 15 3D printers in his home day and night, he also taught other teachers and students the skills and together, they printed over 12-thousand pieces of PPE for hospitals and other frontline workers. Now he’s being rewarded for his efforts by Mazda. He’s one of 50 people the car company has chosen to receive a new MX-5 Miata 100th Anniversary Special Edition for their “selfless acts, creative thinking and contributions to the community.” Erdreich says, “I’m not really one for the spotlight, but this has been a truly incredible experience.”
