Mail Carrier has sweet send off

An Ohio community found the sweetest way to celebrate their mail carrier on his last day of work. Brett Wittwer has been serving the Cincinnati area for over three decades and has come to know some people on his route over the years. They went out of their way to show their appreciation for him on his final day on the job before retiring.

As Wittwer made his rounds, he found surprises waiting at different homes. Some people decorated their mailboxes with balloons, there were gift bags and treats, too. Weber Stricklett made a “Happy Retirement” banner and hung it outside where a group of residents waited for Wittwer as he finished his deliveries one last time.

The mailman says he was overcome with emotion at seeing everyone and admits it was bittersweet. “I probably won’t see most of these people ever again,” Wittwer explains. “It’s kind of a strange feeling. I felt happy, but I felt sad.” He says his plans for the future are open and he looks forward to spending time with his grandkids, adding, “It’s nice to not have a schedule.”
