Good Samaritans help woman out of a burning house

Lariana Garviswas driving with her two children in the car when she noticed a house on fire, flames coming from one of the windows. The Nashua, New Hampshire resident says she flagged down another driver, and that person and a neighbor kicked in the front door of the home. Moments later the two men exited the burning house carrying the home’s 97-year-old occupant. "She was still in her little living room chair, her little velour chair. She was just sitting in there," Garvis says. "She did have some burns."

Garvis reassured the elderly woman as she was carried across the street that she and her dog were safe. Seconds later, the neighbor who helped rescue the woman collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, according to Nashua firefighters. Garvis started performing chest compressions on the neighbor. She says she continued CPR until emergency crews loaded him into an ambulance. "I kept talking to him.” she recalls. “I said 'listen man, you just saved her. You're not dying.'" She was able to contact the neighbor later and confirmed that he’s now recovering.

Garvis is happy that she and the others were in the right place at the right time. "Everyone can be a hero every single day,” Garvis says. “You never really know what's going to happen to you."
