Nurse Jennifer Smith didn’t hesitate when one of her favorite patients said he needed her help.JohnBurleycalled from his hospital room saying his beloved dog,Boomer, was in the pound. She says, “Boomer is John’s world” and when he asked her if she would take care of him, she told him “Of course!”
First, Smith had to find Boomer, so she called around to shelters in Rome, New York, and located him. It turns out, John didn’t have anyone to take care of Boomer when he was hospitalized with pneumonia and lung problems, but his nurse stepped up. She found Boomer, adopted him and is caring for him until John is released. Smith even brings him to work with her and takes him to John’s room for visits a couple times a day.
“There are just so many worries in the world right now. If I can take one worry away from John, that's the least I can do," Smith says. “I can't cure diseases. I'm not a miracle worker ... I made a promise to John to take care of Boomer. I will take care of him as long as he needs me to. John knows that. Right now the focus is on John getting better and taking it one day at a time.”
