Pregnant Firefighter helps crash victim

A huge THANK YOU to all of our First Responders. Even among all of our heroes there are still some who stand out. the story below is an example of how they go above and beyond every day. ~Karla

Megan Warfield was nine months pregnant when she was a passenger in a multi-car crash earlier this month, but she didn’t let that stop her from saving someone else’s life. The Maryland firefighter says she initially got out of the car to help direct traffic after the accident, but when she saw an overturned car with someone trapped inside, she rushed to rescue them.

The 30-year-old mom of three, who had been on desk duty during her pregnancy, pushed aside labor contractions so she could focus on helping the woman in the car. “I started to climb in there with her, but then I was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re nine months pregnant,’” Warfield recalls. “I ended up holding onto her to keep her in place because I wasn’t sure of her injuries at the time.”

Soon after paramedics arrived and took over, Warfield decided she should go to the hospital and have herself checked out. At Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, she found out the accident had induced labor and actually knocked her unborn baby into a sideways position. And then less than 24 hours after the crash, she and her boyfriend, Joshua Daugherty, welcomed a healthy baby girl they named Charlotte. Fire chief Joanne Rund praised Warfield’s actions, calling her a “true public servant” and thanking her for her service.
