Philadelphia first responders donate over 10-thousand toys to children in area hospitals. For the 13th year in a row, the Plymouth Community Ambulance Association has organized an effort to collect and distribute thousands of toys as part of their “Operation Christmas Kids Toy Run.” The event was started by Plymouth Ambulance Chief Thomas Trojansky after his son spent time in the NICU when he was born and has grown over the years to include dozens of other first responder companies and around 70 local businesses.
Once all the toys were collected, more than 75 first responders loaded up their vehicles and proceeded to Bryn Mawr Hospital and then on to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children to donate the toys to kids having to spend the holidays in the hospital. First responders taking part in the procession included EMS, police, firefighters, state troopers, sheriffs, and state game wardens.
The first responders who’ve taken part in the annual event in the past say the best part is seeing the faces of the kids when they get their gifts. "There's no words, no words,” says Trojansky. “You can't put any words on top of seeing a kid that's in a hospital smile.”
