College kids spend Spring Break giving back

Instead of hitting the beach for spring break, a group of college students from Asheville, North Carolina, spent their week off helping to build houses for nine families. Seven students from Warren Wilson College volunteered for the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity during their spring break week.

The students worked with crews on nine different homes in various stages of construction in the New Heights neighborhood of West Asheville. Student and project co-leader Emza Shackelford was excited to get to work on the project. “Habitat has been fabulous … and it’s been great," she says. "It allowed me to stay in the Asheville area as well, which was really nice.”

While the students didn’t have to spend their vacation from school working to help provide housing for low income families in the area, Warren Wilson College does require community engagement from its students in order to graduate.
