With a major winter storm headed our way, local and state leaders are encouraging everyone to stay home whenever possible. If you can avoid the roads, that’s the safest move.
That said, we know some folks still have to get out — work, emergencies, or things you just can’t postpone. If that’s you, experts say one simple step can make a big difference: keep a winter emergency kit in your car.
If you ever end up stranded because of snow or ice, having the right items on hand can help you stay warm, safe, and calm while you wait for help.
Here’s what experts recommend keeping in your vehicle during winter weather:
- Nonperishable food items – Granola bars, crackers, or anything that won’t freeze solid
- Water bottles – Even in cold weather, staying hydrated matters
- Ice scraper – Obvious, but easy to forget
- Extra clothing – Gloves, hats, scarves, boots, and even an extra coat
- Blankets or sleeping bags – These can be a lifesaver if you’re stuck for a while
- Flashlight with extra batteries – Especially helpful at night or during power outages
- Jumper cables – Cold weather is tough on car batteries
- First aid kit – For small injuries or emergencies
- Cell phone charger – A car charger or power bank is clutch
- Flares – To help others see you if visibility is poor
Winter weather can be unpredictable, but being prepared puts the odds back in your favor. A few minutes of prep now can make a big difference later.
Stay safe, stay warm — and if you don’t have to be on the roads, sitting this one out might be the smartest move.
