Anthony has been in foster care since he was nine and the 16-year-old from Beaumont, Texas didn’t think he ever wanted to be adopted, but then he met Bennie Berry. She was his English teacher and he liked her so much he asked her to be his mom.
Berry says that she first thought Anthony was joking around when he brought it up, telling her he wanted to show her a website. So she told him to finish his assignment first, but then she saw what he really wanted to show her. Berry says, “Later I found out that it was really an option to adopt him, so we pushed forward.”
The adoption became official last week and now Anthony has a family to spend the holidays with and both mom and son are delighted. “I have a son,” Berry says. “I’m more than elated. I have a son for the rest of my life.”
